I do not believe there was ever a life more attractive than life on a cattle farm.
Once a year, we book an ultrasound appointment with our partners in animal health: Nagel Veterinary Services from Crossfield. Our vet, Dr. Wise scans each and every cow to check if they are pregnant, so we can see who is ‘expecting’ this Spring! The girls are also given a good visual exam to make sure they are in peak condition. By this point, they are eating for two and they should be big, fat and round, with shiny coats and bright eyes!! Their CCIA tags are also scanned for our records.
150 cows & heifers are put through a quiet cattle handling system and then caught in the chute. First year heifers that are proven to be bred have their calf tags removed and earn their brand-spankin-new cow tags! Everyone gets de-liced as a preventative measure, along with a cocktail of vaccinations that boost momma as well as the calf-in-utero, to give him the best start in life.
Our first calves are due March 24, and I am eagerly awaiting their arrival!!!!
